How To Start An Internet Business – The First Step
Monday, October 12th, 2009
The vast majority of web sites are destined to fail before they are even built. Why? Because people building sites almost always put the cart before the horse. Actually, most don’t even include the horse.
Evolution of Your Site
New sites follow a typical evolutionary process.
1. The first stage involves slaving over the design of the site to get just the right look;
2. The second stage is the publication of the site;
3. Third comes the first thought about how to get traffic to the site;
4. Fourth, the discovery of pay-per-click options;
5. Fifth, the pursuit of PPC campaigns and realization of sales!;
6. Sixth, the “misery stage”, occurs with the realization that sales are being made at a loss!;
7. Frustration, frustration, frustration;
8. The “extinction stage” – With profitability seeming impossible, the PPC campaigns are closed and the site just sits there.
Does any of this sound familiar? You need not suffer this evolutionary extinction! Taking one step before you build a site can save you a lot of wasted time and money.
If You Build It, Will They Come?
The first step to developing a successful web site is keyword analysis. Keywords are the anchors of each page of your site, a collective summary of your products and services.
The first step to developing an online business is to identify whether there is sufficient traffic for your business product or service. Let’s look at a very simple example.
If your are selling boating products, each page of your site should incorporate boating-related keyword phrases. You must analyze whether there is a sufficient number of searches each month to make your boating site a viable entity. A free method for doing this is to use the Overture inventory tool:
http://inventory.overture.com/d/searchinventory/suggestion/
In our example, we would do a search for “boating” to see how many searches there are for the keyword as well as other boating-related keyword phrases. A quick search shows there were over 100,000 searches for “boating” and over 4,000 searches for “boating supply” in March 2005. These numbers suggest that there clearly is enough traffic to build a site selling boating products.
Alternatively, assume that we want to build a site promoting our hiking guide service in Nevada. If we do a search for “Nevada hiking” using the Overture inventory tool, we find that there are only 100 or so searches a month. Should we go ahead and build the site? Probably not. There simply isn’t enough interest to justify spending the time and money.
Unfortunately, we often talk with site owners that have spent significant amounts of money building a site only to find that there is little interest in their product or service. By performing keyword analysis, you can determine whether a site should be built before you spend the time, energy and money on it. There is little reason to build a site that has no chance of success.

How To Start An Internet Business – Site Layout
Monday, October 12th, 2009
The fourth step of how to start an Internet business involves the layout of your site. When organizing it, two audiences must be considered. Obviously, visitors to the site are the first audience. You must also keep in mind the second audience, search engine robots. Both audiences are extremely important and, fortunately, both want the same thing.
Lean, Mean Layout
Your site needs to be clean and quick if you want to be successful. Slow, cluttered sites inevitably fail because visitors and spiders get distracted and leave before taking the action you want. Let’s take a closer look.
Visitors
The layout of your site should allow visitors to quickly find information and solutions. To achieve this, every page should be no more than two clicks from the home page. Have you ever been on a site where you have to hunt to find a particular page? Poor layouts are aggravating and hurt conversion rates.
Make things as easy as possible by interlinking between the site pages. Every page should have links to primary pages and as many other pages as possible. If you look at good site, links to primary pages are listed across the top and bottom of each page. Links to specific services or products are always listed on each page. It may sound like overkill, but make it as easy as possible for your clients to move around.
Spiders
Search engines use programs called “spiders” to surf the net and index sites. When a spider finds a page, it reads the code from top to bottom and left to right. If the code is clean, the spider will index the page and follow the links to the other pages of the site.
If the code isn’t clean, spiders stop indexing pages. If pages aren’t indexed, they do not appear in search engine results. What stops spiders? Following are the most common problems:
1. Bottlenecks – Make sure each page of your site links to every primary page at a minimum. You do not want a spider to get stuck on a page and miss others.
2. Dynamic Pages – Your pages need to be static or carefully designed. If dynamic, spiders often will not index them because they aren’t sure of the content.
3. Frames – Don’t use this antiquated design technique.
4. Poor URLs – A huge mistake is to put database parameters in the URL. The URL should contain only the domain name and keywords for the page. A good URL reads:
5. Images – Don’t overuse images and don’t put text in images. Images slow down your site, so make them small and optimized. Robots do not read text inside of images, thus text needs to go outside of the images or ALT tags need to be used.
Evaluating The Layout
Once the site is designed, TEST IT! Surf the pages and see if you are able to flow through the site. Add internal links wherever possible. Finally, test the load times of your site on a 56k dial-up modem. If the site loads in under 20 seconds, you are headed in the correct direction.
Your site layout is important. Make sure it caters to the needs of the visitors, whether human or spider.

How To Start An Internet Business
Monday, October 12th, 2009
A simple question and yet most people who wanted to start an Internet Business does not have a clue on what to do.
They simply jump into the bandwagon who promised them goldmine in less than 2 or 3 weeks. Or better yet, some even promise you can earn 6 figure incomes in less than 3 days. If this is true, why most people around the world wasting their time and energy working at the office? Will not it be better for us just to stay at home if we can make that kind of income in short period of time?
Yes, it is true that the percentage of people who joined the Internet Business increase day by day. Surprisingly, people who do not make a single cent and broke also keeps on increasing.
There must be something wrong somewhere. So how to start an Internet Business the right way? Listed below two frequently asked questions that most Internet newbies should be aware of.
1) Do I need a lot of money to start my Internet Business?
Yes and no. You do need a little bit of your money to pay for your web hosting account if you have decided to have your own website. You can get a web hosting account around $10 to $50 that you need to pay monthly. Please bare in mind that an expensive hosting account does not mean you are going to get a better account. So you have to make sure you choose an affordable and good service account.
Another thing that you need to pay for is your own domain name. You can get a domain name for less than $10 and the best thing is you only need to pay it on yearly basis.
You don’t need to do all the above if you join an affiliate program. Affiliate program is a business program where the only thing you need to do is marketing and advertising your business. There are a lot of quality forums out there. Ask the questions about the affiliate program, you can be 100% sure that people will give their opinion and help you anyway they can.
2) Do I need to promote my business? Once my website has been setup, I just need to watch and wait for the money to roll into my bank account, right?
You are dead wrong. This is where most newbies only last 1 to 2 months in this business because they are not doing any marketing work. Please put this in your mind, nobody is going to give you a free money without putting some effort to it.
There are many ways to promote your website and there will no spaces to write on this article. But as a beginner, you might try buying Solo Ads from any ezine publishers that related to your business. Not just any publisher, you have to do some research on the popularity of the publisher.
You can also do marketing through your own affiliate program. You can leverage your marketing efforts on affiliates which mean your sales letter is the heart of your Internet Business and targeted traffic is its blood.
Affiliates are individuals who are looking to generate income for themselves without having go through the trouble of creating their own product, writing their own sales letter and building their system. They simply refer potential customers of your product to your sales letter using a special link unique to them, called affiliate link or ID.

One method that will surely get you a targeted prospect is writing articles. If you love to write, try to write articles having to do with the product you are selling. In your articles, you give free and useful information to people who are searching for it.

The Impact Of Positive Thinking On Your Internet Business
Sunday, October 11th, 2009
Positive thinking can help you reap many benefits in your internet business.
Through positive thinking you can achieve better focus, more readily recognize new opportunities, better define your business goals, build up your belief in yourself and your product/service, and more actively seek new ideas.
Positive thinking can help you keep your focus by teaching you to concentrate on what you can accomplish.
Once you believe that you can accomplish a goal, your attention becomes more focused and your determination increases.
You can also use your positive thinking skills to help you recognize new opportunities. With a positive belief in the future, you will become more open to different possibilities.
This belief in what is possible will allow you see certain situation as opportunities for growth and inspiration.
Positive thinking can also come in handy when you set out to define your business goals.
As you learned in the earlier chapters, goals that are set using positive thinking guidelines are easier to achieve and progress towards. You can also use these skills to better define those goals.
The more specific a goal is the simpler the steps are to reach achievement. When you view a goal as being simple to complete, you encourage your progress toward that goal.
Anyone who has ever attempted to set up and run an internet business knows that the undertaking comes with pitfalls. These pitfalls can be better weathered if you are armed with positive thinking skills.
Through positive thinking skills you can expand upon your belief in yourself and your business, which will lead to a better attitude and the belief that your business can grow and flourish. During slow times or times of difficulty, use your affirmation, visualization and goal setting skills to redefine your business and make the changes that will lead you to success.
Finally, you can use your positive thinking skills to help you seek new ideas for your internet business. Whether you need a way to improve a product or a new way to expedite the shipping of a product, you can use your skills to brainstorm for new ideas. By believing in the impossible and putting your positive attitude to work, you will be able to find inspiration in things that others dismiss.
Negative thinkers have a tendency to see a new idea and think, “There is no way that will ever work”. By immediately dismissing the idea, they miss out on the opportunities it can afford. Positive thinkers, however, see an idea and think, “Well, that may not be the exact answer I am looking for, but let’s work through the possibilities and see what we come up with”.
This ability to be open to an idea and eventually expand upon it or reinvent it to suit your exact needs will enable you to benefit from ideas that may not have been positive to start with.

How To Start An Internet Business – Meta Tags And Keyword Density
Sunday, October 11th, 2009
Okay, you have a domain name, layout and content. Now we get to a step that will go a long way to determining how the site will rank. Yes, we are going to focus on two infamous topics, meta tags and keyword density.
Meta Tags
Meta tags are html code blocks that “tell” a search engine what is on a particular site page. Meta tags are not visible on the pages of your site, but search engine robots focus on them. Three different meta tags should appear on each page of your site.
The meta title essentially acts as the title of the page. When you do a search on Google, the meta title is the first underlined text in each listing. The content of the meta title should include the keywords you want to push with the most important being listed first. Each word should be included no more than 2 times and the total word count should not exceed 13 words.
The meta description tag allows for an expansion of the meta title. Use short sentences to emphasize the who, what, why and where of your business. Make absolute sure that every keyword in your title also appears in your description.
One of the aggravating things about search engines is how they use meta descriptions. Most pick only certain sections of your description. When your link appears in the search results, the description may make little if any sense. Unfortunately, there isn’t much you can do about it.
Historically, meta keywords were a very important factor in the ranking process. How times have changed. Google doesn’t even look at them, while MSN and Yahoo give them marginal value. You should still use them, if for no other reason then forcing you to focus on your keyword phrases when creating content.
Keyword Density
Keyword density simply refers to how often keywords appear in a page as a percentage of the total text. A few years back, it was common practice to cram and hide keywords all over a page. You probably remember seeing pages with thousands of keywords listed at the very bottom. This no longer works and is considered spamming by search engines.
Much like the meaning of life, the best keyword density percentage is a hotly debated topic. Theories and opinions ranged from 1.5 to as high as 20 percent. We recently ran a test with a page that only had a keyword phrase on it, thus representing a 100% keyword density. The only search engine that reacted was Yahoo, which listed it at number 1 for 25 days before dropping it. Notwithstanding this test, the simple fact is that nobody really knows the optimal density, except for programmers at the search engines. Rumor has it that they are permanently locked away in the Himalayas, so there isn’t much hope of getting any information from them.
Our experience is keyword density really doesn’t matter if you have flowing text on the page. The point of your site is to sell, so write copy that accomplishes that goal. Once you have completed the copy, modify it to make sure the important keywords appear at least once in the first paragraph. Do not force the keywords into sentences; just make sure they appear at least once. We have clients with number 1 rankings on Google, Yahoo and MSN that have keyword densities ranging from .5 to 18.5 percent. Yes, these rankings are on keywords with lots of competition and traffic.
In Closing
In my opinion, meta tags and keyword density are mystified far too much. They are important factors, but the content on your pages is far more so. Be judicious with your content, pursue a targeted linking campaign and the rankings will follow.

How To Start An Internet Business – Designing For Usefulness
Sunday, October 11th, 2009
The first step to starting any Internet business is conducting keyword research to determine if there is any interest in your idea. Once you identify a need, it’s time to consider what your site should look like.
What Is The Goal?
In considering the look of your site, you first need to determine what elements are needed to promote your service or product. There are endless books, forums and people with adamant opinions on the subject. Some opine a site should be all about linking, while others opine creating a community through message boards is the key. A third set righteously point out a site should be slick or cool, while a fourth group will argue just the opposite. So, who is right and who is wrong? The answer is…all of them.
When developing a site, the goal is actually very simple. Your site should be useful. That’s it, the big secret. The problem, of course, is “useful” means different things for different sites.
A site that provides a service to businesses, such as consulting, should focus on content and linking. A site that promotes something related to entertainment should have an element of cool and have message boards to discuss rumors, etc. A site that sells products should focus on linking and loading quickly, i.e., a simple, clean design. The point is that each site is unique and there is no universal answer. Whatever the particular direction of your site, simply make sure it is useful to your users.
Site Examples
Let’s use Google as our example. What does Google do? It gives users the ability to search and find relevant information. So, should the home page of Google look “cool”? Should it have a lot of content on how to conduct searches? Should it have forums to create a sense of community? No, the home page would be most useful if it simply let you search without bombarding you with a lot of clutter. Indeed, the Google home page is just that.
What about a product site? Let’s use Nomad Journals – http://www.nomadjournals.com – as our example. The site sells writing journals for outdoor activities such as hiking, travel, rock climbing, etc. The site is simple, clean and loads fairly quickly. Unlike Google, the site immediately needs to convey an outdoor impression to visitors. This is accomplished with three outdoor images, a graphic of a “nomad” and images of the journals. The text is keyword dense, but compact and to the point. The page conveys the nature of the product and the “vibe” of the business.
On the other end of the spectrum, consider an entertainment site such as American Idol – http://www.idolonfox.com. The site is slick, offers polls and has community message boards where fans can post messages about the competition. This is a very good layout for this site, but would be horrible for Google or Nomad Journals.
Don’t Rush
From the above examples, you can see that there is no universally correct design for a site. Before charging off to build a site, spend at few days considering what it should look like and WHY. Visit sites that you use frequently. Why do you keep going back? What annoys you about other sites? How do these factors translate to your site?
Once you have the answers, you will be on your way.

How To Start An Internet Business – Content, Content, Content
Sunday, October 11th, 2009
When it comes to e-commerce, the time-tested cliché is, “Content is king.” In this case, the cliché is correct.
Content
For the purpose of this article, content is defined as pages of text on your site. Content is often broken down into two categories, primary pages and information pages. Primary pages are the core of a site, to wit, the home, FAQ, site map, about us, contact us and service or product pages. Information pages are additional pages that support the primary pages, explain your service or product and answer questions. Primary pages convert visitors while information pages generate traffic.
Primary Pages
Preparing content for your primary pages must be done carefully. You should have a list of keywords you want to highlight for each page. Using these keywords, content should be written clearly and concisely. Do not sacrifice the flow of your text in an effort to maximize the placement of keywords. While this common mistake can lead to quicker search engine rankings, it can damage your conversion rates and give visitors the wrong impression of your business. Traffic is useless if it can’t be converted to money. Focus on converting the visitor into a customer.
Information Pages
Information pages serve a number of functions. First, they explain and support your primary pages. Second, they build credibility by providing evidence of your extensive knowledge and expertise. Unlike primary pages, information pages can be written with more of an eye to keyword manipulation.
Information pages also form a critical platform for promoting your site. The pages should be written in such a way as to be easily converted into articles. The articles should be submitted to directories for publication with a byline including a link to your site. As the articles are published, the byline will dramatically increase the link count of your site. The higher the number of links to your site, the higher you move in the rankings.
Information Page Subjects
If information pages are so important, how do you come up with topics? There are three methods.
The first step is to review your product or service. Pages should be created providing explanations for the most simple to complex elements of whatever you are promoting. Make sure to cover basic items. For a real estate agent site, topics should include 1) how to buy a house, 2) how the process works from beginning to end; 3) how escrow works and so forth. Never assume your prospect understands some element of your product or service. Once these pages are created, the site should be significantly bigger and, thus, more attractive to search engines.
The next step is to review the results of the keyword research conducted when you decided to build a site. Looking down the list of keywords, focus on keywords with less than 1,000 searches a month. Every one of these keywords is a potential topic. Because there are few monthly searches, competition for rankings under each keyword phrase is probably low. As you site gains links, the various information pages will move up into top rankings. If you have 50 information pages each producing 100 clicks a month, they will produce 5,000 free clicks a month. Assume a conversion rate of 1/100 and you have 50 sales. As more pages are added, the figures will continue to rise.
Finally, forums are an excellent place to find topics. Forums are sites where people gather to discuss issues related to a particular subject. The discussions typically start when someone posts a question. Each question is a potential topic for a page on your site. Make sure to focus on posts with lots of replies, as the number of replies reflects the amount of interest in the topic. To find relevant forums, simply search for “forum + subject” on any search engine.
In Closing
Google, Yahoo and MSN frequently change the algorithms each uses to produce rankings. Such changes can blow holes in search engine optimization strategies. Continually adding relevant content to your site is just about the only method to smoothly ride these fluctuations. After all, content is king.

Why Internet Business Cannot Escape From The Clutches Of Search Engine
Sunday, October 11th, 2009
Whether you like it or not, the search engine will always remain the number ONE way for people to find your internet business website. There are practically no way any website can escape from the clutches of the search engine even in the future to come. After so many century of research, researchers still can’t find a good replacement for petrol which cars still rely on and that explain why oil will keep rising in the future to come.
Yes, you may write FREE articles and submit it to the various ezine website and get traffic via your article resource box but ask yourself these questions:
In the first place, how do you find those ezine website to submit your article?
The majority of ezine writers still rely on the “Search Engine” to find ezine site to submit their articles by searching for keywords such as “article bank”, “article directory” etc. Imagine the kind of time and effort required if you tried to find these ezine site without the “Search Engine”.
How do MOST people find the relevant ezine site for information that they are looking for?
Again, the majority of us still rely on the “Search Engine” to find the relevant information that we need. Without the “Search Engine”, information finders will not be able to find your articles that are listed on the various ezine website. With the help of powerful “Search Engine” like google, your relevant article will appear to the user in seconds.
As you can see from the above, the search engine act as a bridge for all internet website as it will be very difficult for someone to find information without a common ground such as the Search Engine.
Therefore, as an Internet Business Entrepreneur, it is VERY important for you to allocate part of your time to learn and understand the Search Engine. For example, Google has introduced some measured to fight Domain Spamming. If you are not aware of its changes and still register your Internet Business Domain with a short time span of one or two years, then don’t wonder WHY you still did not received any Search Engine traffics even after staying in the Google Sandbox for six to nine months which has become the normal period before any NEW website is release as search results from the Google Search
Engine.
Keeping your Internet Website within the Search Engine requirement allows you to receive FREE Search Engine traffics which will lead to increase customers for your Internet Business. Of course, don’t focus too much on your Search Engine Ranking Algorithm as it is something which keep changing and is beyond your control.
